Silverlight : Flash by Microsoft
Adobe VS Microsoft: who will dominate ?
Most often presented as the direct competitor to Adobe Flash, this program is also for the Flex Environment or Apple QuickTime. Devised to be compatible with multiple web browser, as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Safari , used on Windows and Mac OS X operating systems, it helps develop web applications enriched with animations, vector graphics and audio-video playback.
Recently, the latest version, Silverlight 2.0 Beta 2, (with a "commercial Go-Live" license) made many significant change and improvement:
- The technology includes all the languages used by Visual Studio in the environment .NET (possibility of using C#, Visual Basic.NET, IronPython...)
- it includes a new templating model called Visual State Manager
- other features include the introduction of TabControl, text wrapping and scrollbars for TextBox, and for DataGrid additions
- the tools to code for Silverlight have been updated (Silverlight Tools Beta 2for Visual Studio and Expression Blend 2.5.)
- ... (to see more)
At the moment, Silverlight is only available in operating systems Windows and Mac OS X, but a version for Linux users is being prepared by the software publisher Novell: it is Moonlight (there is already a version of Moonlight 0.6, the equivalent of Silverlight 1.0).
Attention, it is important to note that Silverlight 2 Beta 2 introduces some changes that will break certain applications targeting the previous version of the beta, Silverlight 2 beta 1.
It is rumored that the the final version of Silverlight should be released this summer or this autumn.
